BYOD: The What, the Why and the How

Bring your own device (BYOD) is a trend that's taking over workplaces of several different industries. A decade ago, few could imagine a hospital that allowed a nurse to pull out her personal smartphone in a patient's room or a doctor that communicated with care teams over text messages. But now that 77% of Americans own a smartphone and 60% use one for work, the idea becomes much more palatable.

While most companies were hesitant to allow personal devices at work, the pros are significant and hard to ignore. Below, we outline the what, the why, and the how behind using personal devices successfully at work.

Alan Tucker – Director of Software Research and Development

On January 10, 2020, Director of Software Research and Development Alan Tucker finally began his well-earned retirement after 24 years of service. Alan's outstanding dedication to providing the highest quality of service to Amtelco and their customers is immeasurable. The many new hires and interns whom Alan took under his wing over the years know how much he valued sharing his knowledge and wisdom in ways that went far beyond the scope of a job.

Alan came to Amtelco after spending nearly 30 years in the newspaper industry as a reporter, editor and manager. Alan enjoyed working for a company on the cutting edge of technology, where accurate and thorough hardware and software documentation is needed as quickly as it is being developed. Alan said he worked best when he had limited time to produce a technical document describing a new development or a complex sales proposal that addressed all of a prospect's questions.

Alan joined Amtelco's materials management department as a shipping clerk in 1996 and moved to the software department as a documentation writer when a new position was created in 1998. Two months later, when longtime editor Chuck Mortel married and moved out of the area, Alan was elevated to documentation editor. Alan's initial assignment involved updating the user's manuals for Amtelco's software from DOS-based products to the Microsoft Windows operating system. Under Alan's guidance, the documentation department went from producing documentation a few years after a product's release date, to publishing documentation in conjunction with the release of the product. Alan also worked with Amtelco's sales force coordinating detailed responses to requests for proposals.

In 2017 Alan passed on the editor hat to technical writer David Drenk and was promoted to Director of Software Research and Development. As Director, Alan served as Vice President of Software Kevin Beale's right-hand man, managed countless development projects, mentored interns and employees, and provided invaluable insight and direction to Amtelco's software engineering team, while providing his editing services to Amtelco employees in multiple departments. Upon Alan's retirement, former Product Manager Gloria Fruit took over the role that Alan filled as Director.

Alan holds a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from Northern Kentucky University and a master of science degree in mass communication with a focus on journalism as literature from the University of Florida. Alan went on to teach journalism classes part-time at both schools he attended and at Miami (Ohio) University. He also developed the journalism curriculum for North Central College in suburban Chicago. Prior to beginning his newspaper career, Alan spent six years as business services and telecommunications administrator at Northern Kentucky University.

Alan will be enjoying retirement with his partner, Darcy Little, who recently retired from the University of Wisconsin. As a Kentucky Colonel, Alan has a standing invitation to attend the breakfast and post-race reception hosted by the governor of Kentucky on Kentucky Derby Day, which he may do now that he has the time. Alan is also looking forward to a trip to Arizona for Milwaukee Brewers Spring Training, and playing guitar with three bands here in Wisconsin.
