In Memory of Tom Delaney
The Amtelco family celebrated the life of Thomas Delaney, who passed away on September 21st, 2023 at the age of 82. Tom was the first salesperson for Amtelco, and he worked at Amtelco for 35 years before retiring.
Amtelco CEO and Chairman Tom Curtin said, “Tom Delaney, or TD as all affectionately called him, started the sales team at Amtelco. He knew that what Amtelco had, and still has, is family and welcoming all of our customers as an extension of that family. This is what he believed in whole-heartedly.”
Tom Delaney received a degree in English from St. Norbert College in 1962. He married his wife, Nan, shortly thereafter, just prior to reporting for service as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army. Tom joined Amtelco in 1974 and helped the company grow from three employees to over 150 in the years that he worked there.
Mr. C (William Curtin II) and TD belonged to the same church. They were both very devout Catholics, and their faith extended to their way of life. They were also very proud Irishmen. Tom and Nan enjoyed pilgrimage trips to Medjugorje, Rome and Assisi, Austria and twice to Ireland, where Tom particularly enjoyed meeting some distant relatives and seeing where his ancestors came from.
Mike Friedel, Amtelco’s executive vice-president of sales, shared some memories of working with Tom: “Tom taught me the art of selling. Tom was my manager when we closed my first deal. Allan Fromm bought the EVE system and I will never forget when, during our meeting, Tom brought out a pen and gave it to Allan and said, ‘Looks we covered everything you need. Please sign the contract, give us a downpayment, and let’s get this going.’ There were many months that Tom would bring in a big sale that would keep the company in business.”
Tom had a way with words, written as well as spoken. He was known for leading the prayer before the meal at every Amtelco gathering. He knew the importance of developing relationships with our clients and making sure we put their best interest first and foremost. He loved talking about his boys and was thrilled when three of the five spent time in the sales department at Amtelco.
He was also a big Wisconsin sports fan, especially Badgers and Packers football. Mike shares, “He was like the great Coach Vince Lombardi in his priorities in life: 1. Faith in God, 2. Family, and 3. Instead of the Green Bay Packers, Tom had Amtelco, then the Packers.”
Amtelco honored Tom for his amazing impact on the company and our customers with a Hall of Fame award in 2009.
In closing his reminisces about Tom, Mike said, “Amtelco is blessed with another angel in Heaven praying for us. Thank you, TD, for a life well lived, and may you now enjoy eternal peace.”
