Tech and the Nursing Shortage – An Interview with Nancy Beale

Everyone has heard about the current nursing shortage the American health system is experiencing. Did you know that according to a 2021 McKinsey survey, twenty-two percent of direct-care nurses were considering leaving their positions within a year? There are also concerns that four million nurses will retire by 2030.

There are plenty of people who have chosen nursing as their future career. Unfortunately, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) said that 80,521 qualified applications were turned away in from nursing schools in 2020. The primary reason for this was because of a lack of clinical sites, inadequate teaching staff, and other resource constraints. At the same time, the AACN projects an additional 200,000 nurses will be needed by 2029.

We got the chance to sit down with Nancy Beale, Ph.D., MSN, R.N., B.C., Chief Nurse Executive, executive healthcare information technology (IT) leader, 2019 recipient of the HIMSS-ANI Nursing Informatics Leadership Award, co-chair for the Alliance for Nursing Informatics, a participant in the NBRC, member of the IHE USA Board of Directors, and President of Telemetrix to ask her about tech solutions to the nursing crisis.

Employee Spotlight

Taylor Hoffman – Database Analyst and Report Developer

Taylor Hoffman has worked at Amtelco since October 2022. He started in the Field Service Department as an Intelligent Series (IS) Engineer and supported our healthcare customers. He has recently become a Data Analyst and Report Developer in the Software Department and will maintain, troubleshoot, and develop reports that will meet our clients' expectations and needs. He is currently cleaning up and simplifying reports and figuring out ways to improve the SQL database performance. Congrats to Taylor on his new position at Amtelco!

When Taylor is not working, he spends time with his wife, Dani, and two cats: Ash, a chubby female tuxedo, and Jodan, a male tripod. Taylor and Dani enjoy traveling and have been to 3 countries and 12 states in the past eight years. He enjoys watching soccer, having played for 14 years, and cheers on Barcelona and Arsenal. He also enjoys watching the Green Bay Packers, though this year was a little rough. Concerts and festivals are a common place to find Taylor, as he and Dani went to 44 different shows and concerts in the last year alone! He hit a fish while driving his car once, which is quite the feat! One time he spent a week driving around Lake Superior, stopping at plenty of mountain bike trails and truly “roughing it” by cooking on the side of the road and getting clean in Lake Superior. He says it was an amazing experience!
